The origin of man

ChristianPhotos.Net - Free High Resolution Photos for Christian PublicationsAnd the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. (Genesis 2:7)

And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.
(Genesis 2:21, 22)

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
(Psalm 139: 14-16)

Basic truths:

[1] God created man into being instantaneously and immediately.

[2] Man’s nature includes both a material and an immaterial aspect.

Discussion (with links to resources; Be like the Bereans! Acts 17:11)

A. God created man into being instantaneously and immediately.

[1] Man is a direct creation of God. Genesis chapters 1 and 2 do not indicate that man was created through a long, evolutionary process. (Why Shouldn’t Christians Accept Millions of Years?; Couldn’t God Have Used Evolution?)

[2] The “days” mentioned in Genesis are literal 24-hour days, as stated in Exodus 20:8-11. God created man on the sixth day. (Could God Really Have Created Everything in Six Days?; Did Jesus Say He Created in Six Literal Days?)

[3] God created Adam from the dust and Eve from Adam’s rib. All other men except Jesus Christ descend from Adam and Eve by procreation (Genesis 3:20 and Acts 17:26). “Procreation” means the normal biological process of conception and birth, or to beget and conceive offspring.

[4] While man was created in God's image, animals were not.

[5] Man was created “in the image of God.” This image includes personal qualities:

  • Personality or “person-hood” (The quality or condition of being a person; The totality of qualities and traits, as of character or behavior, that are peculiar to a specific person; The pattern of collective character, behavioral, temperamental, emotional, and mental traits of a person (from Answers.com)
  • Intellect, will, and emotion
  • The ability to use language
This “image of God” includes moral qualities:
  • Moral purity (Genesis 1:31)
  • The ability to discern right from wrong (Genesis 3:2-3)
B. Man’s nature includes both a material (his body) and an immaterial aspect (his soul and spirit).

God created Adam from the dust and Eve from Adam’s rib. All other men except Jesus Christ descend from Adam and Eve by procreation (Genesis 5:3; 3:20 and Acts 17:26). “Procreation” or “reproduction” means the normal biological process of conception and birth, or to beget and conceive offspring. It is the means by which man’s material and immaterial aspects are passed on from parents to their children.

Man is a tripartite being – body, soul and spirit (Hebrews 4:12).
