John 1:12 states that “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:” Notice that the word “even” is italicized. In the KJV, italicized words are not in the original but were included to make the translation into English more readable and grammatical. The word “even” in its italicized form occurs 56 times in the New Testament. It has two uses:
- as an identification or definition; or
- as an explanation or discussion.
[1] Matthew 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. For examples, “even” used to explain or discuss:
Who is the Master? Christ.
[2] John 5:45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
Who is the one that accuses? Moses.
[3] John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Who is the Comforter? The Spirit of truth.
[1] 2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.In John 1:12, the emphasis should not be on “receive” but on what comes after the word “even” which is “believe”. To whom did Christ give power to become the sons of God? To those who believe in his name.
How are we changed? By the Spirit of the Lord.
[2] 1 Peter 1:9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.
What is the end of our faith? The salvation of our souls.
When people use John 1:12 in evangelism, they then follow it up with Revelation 3:20. With these two verses, they wrongly interpret the word “receive” to mean “you must pray and ask Christ to come into your heart”. The interpretation is wrong for two reasons:
- The stress should be on “believe” and not “receive” in John 1:12; and
- Revelation 3:20 is not an evangelistic verse since it was addressed to the church in Laodicea.
- Matthew 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
- Matthew 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
- Matthew 24:33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

1 comment:
I read the article by Jim Elliff attached to this post and felt he did an excellent job of pointing out the danger of easy-believism (if i may use that phrase). By bringing attention to the true meaning of "receive" as a complete acknowledgement of who Jesus Christ is and what we are required, by God, to do with the sacrificial death of his Son, Elliff establishes that the verse is pointing to "belief", not a mere opening of the heart. However, although Elliff sees the symptom of bad evangelism, false conversions, he was grey about the cause. My concern here is hyper-Calvinism, which I fear Elliff allowed for when discussing verse 13. The extreme Calvinist view will stumble to explain verse 7 and verse 9 of this chapter. Elliff was closer to the real cause of false conversions when he stated that our evangelism should focus on an individuals weight of sin. Easy-believism does not work because it emphasizes Christ coming to us and not us repenting and turning to Christ.
