World religions: Islam

Basic beliefs

[1] There is one God, Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet. The Qur’an (or “Koran”) is the final and superior revelation of God, displacing the Bible.

[2] There is no Trinity; God is one both in essence and in person.

[3] Christ is not God: “In blasphemy indeed are those that say that God is Christ the son of Mary” (Surah 5:17). While Islam honors Jesus as the greatest of all prophets other than Muhammad, it denies that he is the Son of God or deity in any sense.

[4] Christ did not die on the cross. Since he did not die, neither did he rise from the dead.

“And because of their saying: We slew the Messiah Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s messenger--They slew him not nor crucified, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain. But Allah took him up unto Himself. Allah was ever Mighty, Wise” (Surah 4:157-158).
[5] The Muslim, in order to be saved, must fulfill the “Five Pillars” of Islam.
  • Daily recitation of the Islamic confession/creed: “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is the prophet of Allah.”
  • Five daily prayers (at dawn, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and evening) in Arabic in the direction of Mecca
  • Giving of alms
  • Fasting during the entire month of Ramadan (no eating or drinking allowed from sunrise to sunset)
  • Pilgrimage to Mecca during his lifetime
[6] Men are not sinners by nature.

[7] The Christian Scriptures (“Injil”) have been corrupted.

[8] Other beliefs and practices: polygamy and jihad (holy war)

What the Bible says

[1] Christ is God. He is divine in essence. During His earthly ministry, He was inferior in function or position (John 14:28). However, Christ is equal in essence or person to God the Father. Both are fully and equally God (John 10:30). Bible verses supporting Christ’s deity are John 1:1; Colossians 2:9; Hebrews 1:3; Titus 2:13; 2 Peter 1:1; Hebrews 1:8; and 1 John 5:20.

[2] Christ is the eternal Creator and He therefore could not have been created (Isaiah 9:6, Micah 5:2, John 1:3; 8:58; Colossians 1:16; Revelation 1:8).

[3] The Bible speaks of one God in three Persons. God is spoken of in the plural (Genesis 1:26, 11:7; Isaiah 6:8). All three Persons of the Godhead were present at Christ’s baptism (Matt 3:16-17). The three Persons of the Godhead are mentioned in Isaiah 48:16, 61:1; Matthew 28:19, John 15:26; Galatians 4:6;, Acts 2:33, Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 12:3; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Timothy 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 3:13; and Hebrews 9:14.

[4] Jesus died on the cross (Matthew 27:50; Mark 15:44-45; John 19:31-34; 1 Corinthians 15:3). Christ physically rose from the dead (Matthew 28:5-7; Luke 24:36-43; John 2:19-21; Acts 1:3; 1 Corinthians 15:4; Colossians 2:9; 1 Timothy 2:5).

[5] Salvation is by grace alone (basis) through faith alone (means) in Christ alone (object), and not by works (John 1:29, 1 John 1:7; 2:2; Romans 3:20; 10:2-3; Galatians 2:16, Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5)

[6] The Bible is inerrant or without error (2 Samuel 7:28a; Psalm 12:6; 18:30a; 19:7-9; 119:140; 119:142; Proverbs 30:5; John 17:17; Romans 2:20; Colossians 1:5; Ephesians 1:13).
